Lt. Mark Harper, Deland, FL

CERT members assisted the fire department with the installation of smoke detectors. A fire department and CERT representative went door-to-door to ensure that everyone in the community had working smoke detectors. On one particular day, teams installed 34 detectors and batteries in 26 others. That's 60 homes in one small retirement community that now has working smoke detectors. It was great public relations for the fire department and an opportunity for the CERT members to show themselves in their community.

Do you or any other groups have a SOP for using CERT to install and maintain smoke detectors? Our group is looking to start a program and we would like some information on any programs/grants that would allow us to obtain equipment (ladders, drills, information pamphlets, etc) as well as the smoke detectors themselves. Any information or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
