Having been part of the CERT program since 1993. I have seen and been part of the growth of the organization. Its been my expirence that NETWORKING plays a big part. In the past few years I have done numerous public events for the city all along promoting CERT. Being CONSISANT also goes far. To me its like running a business. Being a CERT Battalion Coordinator, I also have a great relationshipship with all 3 of my Battalion Chiefs. An example of this, this Saturday I am attending a class given by a Angeles Nation Forest work crew on brush clearance inviting the foothill community CERT teammembers. September see us doing a search and rescue drill with yet another organization. Should I need material on landslides, I can go to U.S.G.S. at Cal Tech. Currently, I have starting mentoring 2 new Coordinators in the neighboring battalion. In the past I had advised many of my peers to take the Red Cross first responder class or become a EMT. I opted for the EMT class last year. In the County I am also assisting 2 other communties to get thier CERT program started by doing presentations using documenation from my past to show how the program works in real life. Remember the organization is only good as its leadership is. CERT, we are everwhere.

What (if any) experience do you have with multi jurisdictional CERT programs and mutual aid compacts for CERT? Also can I get more info on the work you are doing starting CERT programs in other cities? A little background information our CERT team is a 42 member team, our OEM is a man shop, about half of the surrounding 12 cities have CERT teams ranging from 12-200 (except Ft Worth which has about 600) members, serving about a 25 square mile area are in the secondary planning stages of starting a joint CERT team with our east neighbor. In addition, we do have a rather experienced staff after this year you may have seen our city on the nightly news!!!

While we don't have any mutual aid compacts, LAFD CERT did respond to Catalina Island (see http://www.cert-la.com/events/070511/070511.htm) to work with LA County CERT.

LAFD CERT also invites anyone from anywhere to take the basic CERT training, and CERT graduates from other jurisdictions are welcome to participate in our refreshers, our Quarterly Division Trainings (see http://www.cert-la.com/quarterly-trainings.htm), at public events, and on our Call-Out Teams.
