We've done the regular CERT training - and we're continuing to meet monthly to further enhance our skills. Next, the fire department is going to teach us how to get out of a house that's experienced an earthquake - how to safely release the springs holding a garage door closed; how to get out of or into a front door jammed from the shift in foundation, etc. Also, as a group we're going to use plumber's tape and fasten down our hot water heaters and attach our heavy pieces of furniture to 2x4's in our walls to keep them from falling down in the event of an earthquake. We're in Zone 4 for earthquakes! In addition, every homeowner purchased new Motorola walkie talkies so we can communicate from one end of our subdivision to another in case our phones go out (last June 13th we had 8" of snow and no phones or electricity for 12 hours - yes, June!) We've written protocols for their use and we run a "test" every 6 months. On May 18 we're putting up new address signs at the driveway of every home to help emergency responders find us. We're also working to set up emergency phone trees in 5 additional subdivisions to warn of wildland fires or other disasters, and we're organizing the First Annual Montana CERT Conference here later this year. The Montana State University Extension Service Fire Training Services office will be jointly sponsoring it with our Hyalite Meadow CERT and the Sourdough-Rae Fire Departments. We're working hard here in Bozeman!CARBON COUNTY/YELLOWSTONE COUNTY, MTContact: Kandy Rose, Community Liaison Officer, Sourdough Rural Fire Department
