The City of Chandler is a rapidly growing community with a current population of over 215,000 residents. We began offering CERT training to our citizens in May of 2002, and have seen rapid growth since. Our program features a 3-tier system of involvement, makes its members City Volunteers, and offers a structure including a CERT Council, District Administrators, and Fire Station Liaisons. This program has been well received by our Citizens and we look forward to its future within our Community.

The Cottonwood Fire Department has initiated this outstanding disaster training in the Verde Valley. The public response has been fantastic. Our first team of 18 volunteers has hit the ground running in several directions to help establish the team in this small desert community. The dynamic team members and their elected leaders have organized additional training classes, participated in community service projects, held car washes to earn monies for equipment and supplies, recruited new members for future CERT classes, and solicited generous charitable donations from the magnanimous local merchants.

Linden is a small community in the Northern Arizona White Mountains. We began training the CERT team last fall and have two teams in training at this time. We have plans for approximately 30 people to help cover our rural fire district. All the people in the program are highly motivated and willing to do what ever is asked of them.We are finding more and more areas that they are an asset to the Fire Department, not just in disasters, but in other emergencies too.

Bank of America

Bank of America offered CERT training for associates and 75 volunteers have signed up. Half of the group has trained on two Saturdays in April and the other half will be trained on two Saturdays in May. All 75 will receive CPR training in May or June. We realize we are the first corporation in Arizona to offer the program, but we were curious if any other corporation has done this in the nation. We are planning to have some local media coverage and hopefully other organizations will adopt the same idea. The demographic of our facility was the basis for the decision to offer the program. The facility is located within two miles of the Phoenix airport, 1/2 miles from the bus station and bordered on two sides by major freeways. After researching internally through our legal, human resources and corporate life safety departments, we received the approval to offer the program. We then obtained approval from local management and requested they fund the program for our associates. We have since had another Bank of America site in Tempe, Arizona sign up for the program. They are currently obtaining volunteers and will then schedule their training.
